In Vietnam, when someone cannot express an idea in English, people may conclude that (s)he does not have enough vocabulary or “enough words”. That is the way of learning English by rote. They train learners by letting them repeat the words by heart both in written form and spoken form. Learners almost ignore the linguistic features that are very basic to help them to broaden their vocabulary. In fact, the morphological analysis can help them with their route of learning. It is high time that English teachers taught the basic principles of morphology to students during their teaching English for their students.
Its etymology is Greek: morph-means ‘shape, form’, and morphology is the study of form or forms. (Aronoff & Fudeman, 2011, p. 1). Or in the other words, morphology is the study of word formation, including the ways new words are coined in the languages of the world, and the way forms of words are varied depending on how they’re used in sentences (Lieber, 2013, p. 2). Aronoff and Fudemen (2011) define that in linguistics morphology refers to the mental system involved in word formation or to the branch of linguistics that deals with words, their internal structure, and how they are formed (pp. 2–3).
Morphology (is the branch of grammar that) deals with the internal structure of words and rules governing the formations of the word in a language. The next sessions of this chapter will discuss what are the internal structures of words and how they form with each other in a word.
